I have written a great deal about judicial merit retention over the past several months. Is it because I know Supreme Court Justices Lewis, Quince and Pariente? No. I have seen them speak; I have read their decisions along with those of the rest of the court; and I have spoken to others who know things about them.
I have written because I am appalled and just a little bit afraid of what I see happening before me. I am no “Pollyanna” and I try to be pragmatic in my view of the world. But, I never thought I would see conservative groups driven by corporate America threatening the very fabric of our democratic structure. Seriously, these well-funded PAC’s have no moral conscience, no ethical judgment and no limit on funds!
You see, I still believe in a careful balance in our government and I still believe that most of the elected officials SHOULD be working for we citizens.
I still believe that Corporate America should not have a better place in line with my representative than I do, simply because they can afford to pay better.
I still believe that we should elect people because they are competent and because they try their very best to do a good job – not just because they agree with me or you or Karl Rove.
I still believe that a part of my responsibility in order to vote is to read and educate myself about all the candidates. It is my job to ignore the blizzard of inane advertisements designed for 30 second attention spans and make a rationale and well thought out decision.
I still believe in America. I still believe in my state of Florida. And I still believe that one day we will elect leaders who know how to lead and are not tied at the hip with the most powerful party at the time, but are able to be their own man or woman – even if it costs them the office they hold.
I still believe that citizens who vote will ultimately make the right choice and not in the interest of some party platform.
I still believe today… because I still am an American… tomorrow I will have to let you know.
